Youth Off The Streets congratulate their 2006 scholarship recipients and thanks the 2006 sponsors. Below are details of each young person and the award they received.

   
 

The Stafford Family Trust Scholarship

Presented to Leayra

Leayra has lived independently since the age of 15. She has faced significant challenges in her life, including domestic violence, mental illness and abuse, often taking on the ‘mother role’ in the family, despite no longer living at home. She has supported herself working in the kitchen of the Bermagui Country Club, but has recently finished working to focus on her HSC, which she will sit later this year. Leayra’s goal is to become a chef & her scholarship funds will be used to assist her during her TAFE training & apprenticeship.

 
 
The Laurance Wines Scholarship

Presented to Lakoda

Lakoda lives with her grandparents who bear the cost of her education, as well as supporting her talent in netball and basketball. Her grandparents find it hard to travel; therefore transport to regional competitions is a problem for Lakoda. Lakoda has hearing problems and needs to wear hearing aids, which are also an additional cost for the family. The scholarship funds will assist in the development of her sporting talent, as well as support her education as she works towards her school certificate and HSC.
 
 

The Northern Beaches Social Riders Scholarship

Presented to William

William was born with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, which has left him with challenges he has worked bravely to overcome. William has significant talent in the field of Artistic roller–skating, competing at both state and national level; his aim is to represent Australia internationally. He lives with his long-term foster parents, who are both pensioners. His foster father recently suffered a stroke and now struggles to transport William to training sessions and competitions. Working with his foster parents and his coach, William’s scholarship pathway plan will be developed to help him reach his skating potential and give him options for his future.

 
 

The Eden Gardens Scholarship

Presented to Evon

Due to difficult family circumstances, including extremely high expectations placed on her, Evon moved out of home early in 2005 and now lives in independent accomodation in Marsfield. She travels three hours by public bus and train to attend Beverly Hills Girls High School, where she receives support and encouragement in her educational goals. Her scholarship will provide her with both financial and personal support over the next two years.

 
 

The Farrell Foundation Scholarship

Presented to Karen

Karen comes from a remote indigenous community in the Northern Territory. She is one of five siblings, four girls and 1 boy. She recently became disengaged from her studies after transferring to a school close to the caravan park where her father lives. She is now back at a boarding school in Darwin, and her education costs are supported through Abstudy. However, Karen has very little financial support for additional tutoring to improve aspects of her schooling, as well as giving her the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities. The scholarship funds will be used to help keep Karen engaged at boarding school giving her the opportunity to complete year 12.

 
 

The NRMA Insurance Scholarship

Presented to Erin

Erin’s goal is to become the first Indigenous Prime Minister of Australia. She is the first in her family to attempt the HSC and is committed to going to university. Instability in Erin’s life affected her greatly and over the last couple of years she has suffered from depression. She is now focused on studying for her HSC, with the aim of going on to university in Sydney. Her scholarship funds will be used to support her educational goals.

 
 

The Samuel Louis Scholarship

Presented to Stevie

At the end of 2005, Stevie had to move out of home. She is now back at home and working a part-time job, as well as completing a traineeship in hospitality and attending school studying towards her year 12. She has considerable musical talent and her scholarship funds will be used to develop this talent, as well as take some financial strain off her so that she can focus on her studies.

 
 

The McGrath Estate Agents Scholarship

Presented to Mostafa

Mostafa and his family came to Australia as refugees. He is the youngest of six children and after his father left Australia for good in March 2006, his mother now struggles to support the family. Since arriving in this country, Mostafa has worked hard to overcome the language barrier and is now in year 10 at Caringbah High School. His scholarship will be used to enhance his academic skills giving him the opportunity to pursue ongoing education following his HSC.

 
 

The IPC Employment Scholarship

Presented to Nahla

Nahla's mother died in Lebanon when she was very young, and Nahla’s family situation has been very difficult since then. Nahla had to leave home at the beginning of 2006 and is currently living in semi-independent accomodation. Bankstown Girls High School confirms that Nahla demonstrates strong academic potential in all subjects and she will use her scholarship funds to support her ongoing education.

 
 

The Slingsby Holdings Scholarship

Presented to Rachel

Rachel has been in care with relatives from a young age and now lives independently, due to a breakdown in family circumstances. She is completing the second year of her HSC and hopes to go on to further education (either TAFE or university) to gain qualifications in social work. Rachel’s scholarship funds will assist her with her studies.

 
 

The Downer Engineering Scholarship

Presented to James

James was born in Sudan. When he was seven, war broke out and his father was killed in the fighting. He became separated from his mother and has not seen her since. He spent 8 years in a refugee camp before being accepted to Australia in 2003, along with his two younger brothers. Since arriving in Australia, James has completed his year 10 and 11 and is currently a VCE student at a Catholic school in Victoria.
James and his brothers live in public housing and support themselves as well as attending school full time. James scholarship funds will be used to support his education costs.

 
 

The Amcal Pharmacies Scholarship

Presented to Krystal-Lee

Krystal-Lee performs well academically despite her difficult family situation. She has unstable living arrangements and will benefit from both the financial and personal support that the scholarship provides. Her goal is to complete her HSC and go on to university to study family law.

 
 

The NSW Sporting Goods Association Scholarship

Presented to Shayne

Shayne is a talented sportsperson with strong abilities in both athletics and rugby league. He has demonstrated his talent at a range of levels, including state representation. Following the death of his father in 1996, family breakdown forced Shayne to find independent accomodation. He is now supporting himself in St Vincent De Paul Youth Housing in Picton. Shayne is currently completing year 11 and will use his scholarship funds to develop his sporting talent and improve his academic performance over the next couple of years, with the aim of gaining a sufficient UAI for university entry to study Physical Education teaching.

Presented to Tahnee

Tahnee has lived out of home since the age of 14 due to severe family breakdown. She has moved from a refuge and now lives in semi-independent living. Tahnee is determined to complete her HSC and go on to university to study a bachelor of fine arts. Her scholarship funds will assist her in her goal to one day pursue a career in the field of visual arts.

 
 

The A & D.J Building Services Scholarship

Presented to Chris

Chris has been involved with Youth Off The Streets through the Macquarie Fields outreach program. He acknowledges the challenges of growing up in his local community and feels that he can be a positive role model to other young people from the area. He is currently completing a Bachelor of Teaching at the University of New England. He worries about his mother who struggles to support him while studying. Chris’s scholarship funds will be used to financially assist him while at university, easing the pressure on his family.

Presented to Chantelle

Chantelle has no family support and lives in semi-independent accomodation. Chantelle’s aim is to join the Victorian Police Force; she is currently completing an advanced Diploma of Justice. Recently, after persistently approaching the police in her local area, she was approved to take part in a pilot program allowing her a work experience placement with the Victorian police force; this placement was a great success. On completion of her diploma, Chantelle aims to complete a degree in Criminology and attend the Victorian Police Academy. Her scholarship funds will support these career goals.

 
 

The Pivot Group Scholarship

Presented to Brendan

Brendan’s family are from an isolated rural community in Tasmania. Due to the isolation, Brendan has been forced to move to supported accomodation closer to his college. He has the potential and work ethic to achieve academically, and hopes to continue his education after school aiming to complete a Bachelor of Human Movement at Launceston University. Brendan’s goal is to become a PE teacher and his scholarship funds will be used to assist in the completion of his HSC and his transition to university.

 
 

The Kay & Tom Dennis Memorial Scholarship

Presented to Jaana

Jaana has a three-year-old daughter, Isabella. She is committed to gaining her HSC and is currently enrolled in year 12 through a Young Parents Access Program at a local senior college. After an absence from study for some time, Jaana shows commitment and achievement in her course. Her scholarship funds will be used to assist her to continue her education at university, where she aims to complete a forensic science degree.
