  Youth Off The Streets congratulate their 2004 Scholarship Program Recipients and thank their generous 2004 Scholarship sponsors. Below are details of each young person & the award they received.
   
 

The IGA NSW Scholarship
(sponsored with donations from the following NSW IGA stores: North Sydney IGA, Newtown IGA, Tregear IGA, and Doonside SUPA IGA) - presented to Natashya

Natashya is a very independent 17 year old who was made a ward of the state at the age of 11 after being removed from her parents. Natashya has recently secured her own accommodation but once she pays her rent and bills there is very little money left to assist her with education. Natashya is currently studying an Aged Care certificate at TAFE and the scholarship funds she has been provided with will help her continue these studies. She plans to work in the Aged Care field once qualified.
 
 
The Alan Jones Scholarship – presented to Keiron


Keiron is an outstanding 15-year-old who has a deep understanding of traditional values and possesses enormous theatrical talent, with the ability to sing, dance, act & entertain. Keiron is currently studying at Poem, an Outreach Education Program based in Sydney.
Despite his enthusiasm, natural talent, and the support of his family, Keiron does not have the money to further his skills with additional dance or acting classes.

With these scholarship funds, Keiron will pursue training opportunities through the Sydney Dance Company, before he is eligible to audition for NAISDA at the age of 18. This Scholarship will give Keiron the opportunity to build on his natural talent and provide a solid basis for a career in the performing arts.

 
 
The Boland Scholarship – presented to Tarnie


Tarnie has been a ward of the state since the age of 13 following the death of her mother. She is a determined and talented young woman, but lacks the benefit of family support to help her reach her potential. Tarnie has recently secured her own accommodation and works 2 jobs to support herself.

Tarnie is currently completing her HSC via correspondence and following this would like to attend NIDA to further her goal to become an actress.
Tarnie will use the funds she has been provided to assist her to complete her education & further her natural acting talent.

 
 

The Masonic Care Scholarship – presented to Amanda


Amanda is a young woman with enormous potential. Although she became disengaged from school for some time, she is a natural academic who has not given up on her ambition and strive to further her education.

Amanda is currently studying for her school certificate through the Poem Outreach Education Program in Sydney. Amanda has been student of the week a number of times but often finds it hard to focus with the additional responsibility of the care of her young daughter. Amanda is a wonderful mother, who will use the funds she has been provided with to help support her in her studies in order to realise her full potential.

 
 

The Youth Off The Streets Scholarship - presented to Sarah

 


At only 16 years old, Sarah has shown remarkable resilience through extremely difficult times, earning deep respect from her teachers and achieving outstanding academic results at school. Sarah recently moved into a “Live N Learn” Campus, which supports young people aged 16-25 living out of home, who want to continue their studies. Sarah is currently completing her HSC & has been successful in gaining entrance into the National Art School HSC Extension course in visual arts.

Sarah is a highly talented artist who intends to pursue a visual arts course following her secondary schooling. These scholarship funds will assist Sarah to pursue training and opportunities to further nurture her talent in art and to further her all round education.

 
 
The Rose Scholarship – presented to Tyrone


Tyrone currently lives with his Nan after the tragic loss of both his parents. For most of his life, Tyrone has taken on an adult role and at 15 years old, he is a very focused and positive student. Tyrone has a clear set of goals once completing his school education. He has a 100% attendance rate at his school, is a peer mediator and has received 4 principal awards in the last 4 years.

At the completion of his secondary education Tyrone aims to pursue TAFE training as a chef. He will need to travel 66 kilometres each day to attend this course. Although he has the full support of his Nan and extended family, Tyrone would find it extremely difficult to cover the costs associated with this training without the scholarship funds he has been provided.

 
 
The Elaine McTaggart Scholarship – presented to Lorinda


Lorinda is 18 years of age and is completing her HSC over two years. She is also a part-time carer for her disabled mother. Lorinda has extensive talent in the area of fashion design and submitted her own impressive nomination for the Scholarship Program. Lorinda recently had her artwork selected for a student exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery and possesses a high level of skill and knowledge of Visual Arts. Lorinda will use the funds she has been provided to complete further studies in design and to purchase much needed art supplies and equipment.

 
 
The Harris Scholarship – presented to Aron


Aaron left school in year 10 because of harassment and moved from his family in Queensland to Albury earlier this year. Aron is currently attending a TAFE youth FAVE course. He supports himself and lives in his own accommodation.

Aron is exceptionally gifted in computer programming and he has a solid understanding of most computer applications. He will use the funds he has been awarded to further his studies in computer programming and applications and to purchase computer equipment.

 
 

The Sydney University Village Scholarship – presented to Ben

Ben lost his father at a young age and currently cares for his disabled mother. Ben and his mum find it extremely difficult to cover the cost of his education.
Ben has made fantastic progress over the last 3 years. He is working hard to complete his School Certificate and was school leader at his previous school, considered a model student by teachers and staff.

Ben travels from Toronto to Newcastle each day to further his desire of obtaining his HSC. He has tremendous ability and determination and will use the funds he has been provided to assist him to complete his higher education.

 
 
The Jorg Volker Scholarship (donated by Carmel Volker) – presented to Liam


Liam is a highly talented sportsman and an exceptional gymnast; he has the natural ability to perform. He participates in a number of out of school sporting activities, all of which he excels in. Liam is currently enrolled in Saturday morning classes at the Flying Fruit Fly Circus and in September he auditioned for entry to the circus school fulltime. Liam lives with his mother who would struggle to afford to the cost of his attendance at the Flying Fruit Fly School.

Liam’s' Scholarship funds will be used for school fees, special uniform and equipment, supporting Liam to further his natural talent.
