  MEDIA RELEASE January 12, 2007

Miss World Australia, Young ambassadors from Youth Off The Streets and The Hon Tony Stewart MP will accompany Father Chris Riley to a remote East Timor Orphanage.

On Monday January 15, Father Chris Riley, CEO and Founder, Youth Off The Streets will be returning to East Timor to continue his Service Learning Programme as part of his organisations’ ongoing support of an orphanage in Baguia.

This year, Fr Riley will be accompanied by 4 young people from Youth Off The Streets programmes who will be donating their time to care for the children of the orphanage to allow the nuns, who run the orphanage with very limited resources, some much needed respite. The group is comprised of three young women who have been chosen as Trainee Youth Workers for the Youth Off The Streets Macquarie Fields Outreach Programme and Shayne Walsh, a 2006 Youth Off The Streets Scholarship recipient.

“The young people I am taking with me have been chosen because they have shown great leadership potential. By helping out at the orphanage, they will learn to understand the importance and value of being generous to others. In the past, Service Learning has helped young people develop greater self-esteem and positive values. As future role models in their communities, these are necessary qualities for these kids to build on,” said Father Chris Riley.

Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets also supports the Baguia orphanage by organising funding and donations of food, clothing, educational tools and sporting equipment.

Miss World Australia, Sabrina Houssami and Miss World NSW, Caroline Pemberton, will join the Youth Off The Streets Service Learning Programme to fulfil part of the Miss World Beauty With A Purpose role and bring profile to the good work being performed in the region.

Father Chris Riley and Youth Off The Streets are very grateful to The Honourable Tony Stewart MP for his support of this project and Bankstown District Sports Club for providing the funding for the 2007 Service Learning trip.

About Youth Off The Streets:

Youth Off The Streets is a community organisation working for young people who are chronically homeless, drug dependent and recovering from abuse. We support these young people as they work to turn their lives around and overcome immense personal traumas such as neglect and physical, psychological and emotional abuse.

Since opening in 1991, Youth Off The Streets has grown from a single food van delivering meals to young homeless people on the streets of Kings Cross to a major youth specific agency providing a wide range of services offering a full continuum of care.

It is our goal that these young people will leave our care drug free, with a high school education, living skills and a full or part time job in hand.
