What is the theme?

Everyday we are bombarded with commercial advertising that affects our attitudes and behaviours. GetReel asks young people aged 10-16 to use the power of advertising to positively influence others teenagers on the risks of drug use.

GetReel asks young people to think about the drugs that they may come into contact with (ranging from licit drugs like alcohol and tobacco to illicit drugs such as marijuana and ecstasy) and develop a concept for an awareness advertisement targeting youth.

Entries can submitted in a variety of formats including

  • Script
  • Storyboard
  • photo sequence
  • PowerPoint presentation
  • DVD
  • video
  • imovie
  • Windows movie maker

If you want to produce your entry in a different format, just check with us first. Call 02 8332 5000. Be creative!

You do not need the latest high-tech video equipment to enter - it is the concept for the advert and drugs awareness message that is important.

How to enter

  • Entries are accepted in two divisions: Middle school (grades 5-8) and Secondary school (grades 9-10)
  • Entries can be submitted individually or in teams. Teams can consist of a maximum of 6 members

GetReel provides an opportunity for learning that is student centered and peer based. GetReel is not limited to the PDHPE curriculum; the development of scripts, plays, short films and storyboards, along with the use of video or computer technology, enables the program to be relevant to various curriculum areas such as TAS [Technical Applied Science], Drama, English and Art. Along with increasing students' knowledge of the risks of drug use, the competition promotes resilience building in students by providing opportunities to develop personal skills and strengthen relationships between teachers and the wider school community. The students will make use of their research skills as they search for accurate information during the production of their entries. The GetReel competition is also an ideal project for students to work on in teams as an internal school or year group competition.
