A big THANKYOU to everyone who entered GetReel 2004!!

We received nearly 500 entries from schools & community groups throughout Australia and were very impressed with the informative and imaginative entries from both divisions this year.

Judging of the entries

On October 20th 2004 after a pre-judging process by Youth Off The Streets, a panel of judges reviewed 6 short listed entries from each division. The judges included experts from drug and alcohol peak bodies, the education sector, television production companies, the advertising industry, staff from Youth Off The Streets and young people from Youth Off The Streets Key College. We would like to sincerely thank all those who took part in the judging process this year.

  CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNING TEAMS!!!

This year we are pleased to announce that a winner & runner up entry were chosen from both the Middle & Secondary school divisions.

MIDDLE SCHOOL DIVISION
Winning entry: - Allenstown State School, Rockhampton, QLD. This PowerPoint presentation was a play on the ‘Mastercard’ advertisement "Priceless" focusing on the financial cost of using drugs and highlighted the common problem of poly-drug use amongst young people.

Runner up: - Rajam Productions, Belrose, NSW. This video entry was from a student who designed & produced the advert in his own time with his friends. The advertisement focused on the danger of drinking & the dangerous decisions made when intoxicated.

SECONDARY SCHOOL DIVISION
Winning entry: - Alice Springs High School, Alice Springs, NT. This storyboard entry from one student focused on issues facing teenagers today including family, relationships and peer pressure. The advertisement gives the message "drugs will not solve your problems" and was rated highly due to the consideration that had been given to other factors that may affect youth drug use in today's society.

Runner up: - Rushworth P-12 College, Rushworth, VIC. This video entry focused on the damage that drug taking can do & how it can affect a young person’s dreams for a positive future.

The winning & runner up entries again receive fantastic Sony prizes, including a Sony XR Wega TV for the winning schools and compact Sony clock radios for the winning students. Runners up receive Sony Digital8 Handycams for the school and Sony DVD/CD packs for the students.

Both the winning entries will be made into Community Service Announcements for screening on National TV during 2005!

Our congratulations also go to the following schools, whose students submitted entries that were SHORT-LISTED:

St Johns College, Nambour QLD
Pine Rivers State High School, Strathpine QLD
Sydney Technical High School, Sydney NSW
Lourdes Hill College, Hawthorn QLD
St Francis Xavier College, Florey ACT
Manangatang P-12 College, Manangatang VIC

SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:
St Johns College, Nambour QLD – who had 3 of their student entries short-listed.

Manangatang P-12 College - one of whose students pulled together their local community and emergency services to assist in the production and filming of his video entry. The extra work and effort put into the production of this entry was evident from the real life crash scene scenario and the final effective advertisement.

Well Done!!
